Solar Water Heater

Solar Water Heater
[1] The solar water heaters are used to raise the temperature of water and store it for various purposes as when needed. It consists of the following main components connected wuth the help of insulated piping.
1. Flate plate collectors
2. Storage tank
3. Heat exchanger
4. Pump
[2] The water is heated in the flat plate collectors. the low temperature water is fed from bottom side of collector and high temperature water is taken out from the top of the collector.
[3] The storage tank is insulated to retain the heat of water with minimum losses. The heated water is stored in the tank for further use.
[4] The Heat Exchanger is incorporated between the collector and storage tank. It is used in primary cycle of the collector.
[5] Pumps are used for circulation of fluid.

Advantage of Solar Water Heating

1. You are using free energy! Solar energy is free and abundant(Even in cloudy weather)
2. They are efficient. Approximately 80% radiation is turned into heat energy.
3. You save money on fuel bills.
4. They lower your carbon footprints.
5. Domestic and commercial are entitled to claim the renewable heat incentives.

Disadvantage of Solar Water Heating

1. Solar thermal panels can only heat water. Solar PV panels, however, generate electricity and some of the electricity can also be used to heat water. So there is more flexibility with solar PV.
2. Annual maintenance is recommended
3. Usually a new hot water cylinder will need to be installed so space is required to house this.

Flat Plate Collectors

[1] These are the most important part of any solar thermal energy system. [2] It is simplest in design and absorbs direct and diffuse radiation both converts it into useful heat. [3] It suitable for heating to temperature below 100°.

Advantage of  Flate Plate Collectors
1. Less maintenance requires.
2. Utilities the both the beam as well as diffuse radiation for heating

Disadvantage of Flate Plate Collectors
1. No tracking of sun.
2. Low water temperature is achieved.
3. Large heat losses by conduction and radiation.
